the average american spends nine hours a day on media, of which an incredible 241 minutes is given away to television. (that’s just over four hours, the left over five are used to read a newspaper, go online, to indulge in instant messaging or other media.) 30 to 70 percent of each hour is spent on television. another study recently done in holland by a phone company starting up iptv shows similar stunning results. global conclusions include that nowsumers mix their media up to about three types. tv is the biggest time waster.

adventures of robot joe
with kind permission by mister_oh

both studies also show that while we’re looking at the flickering screen we are usually doing something else too. in holland side activities include talking with someone in the same space, using the computer and making phone calls. biggest tv interupting annoyances are incompatibly enough being called, your ringing doorbell and other people talking or commenting the tv content. i.e. human-human interaction.
i think it shows us that human beings like you and me are getting more media wise. the speed with which new media such as cell phones and computers have penetrated our lives is amazing. unfortunately it also shows that we are lazy and bored species. lazy as in still and intentionally preferring the most static (or passive) channel of information as prime time filler. bored because news and crime shows are most wanted. in other words: while we choose to do nothing we pant for hyped up pictures of war and crime. lust for sensation and scandal from your own comfortable armchair. and it shows that we are egocentric bastards. i guess i’m not amazed this time. (kp)
